Heather and I managed to get into Winnipeg Monday night safe and sound but rather late. Our flight was delayed an hour and we didn’t get our bags until 11:45 PM to Heather’s surprise. As an ex Air Canada Mechanic she believes that only Air Canada is late (and usually is) and proclaimed “This is West Jet! They’re not supposed to be like AC, they should be on time!”
The trip back was of course more comfortable thanks to some really cute and comfortable shoes that we found at The Bay downtown. Here is my lovely Fiancee modeling them on the left and my lovely brother in-law on the right.
Our last day in Calgary was fun and an improvement over a nauseous Sunday night. Being flat landers from Manitoba we found all the driving up and down around Calgary a little too much and needed some down time on Sunday night. We managed to make up for it on Monday by going for lunch with Chris and Fo and what would a trip to downtown Calgary be without a visit to the Glenbow museum.
Chris joined us after some arm twisting (thanks to Fo!) and we headed down to the Palomino in what I’m told is a bit of a slum in downtown Calgary. By Winnipeg standards it’s a nice slum and the pull apart pork sandwich was tasty, as were Heather’s boring fries. It was also my first experience eating grits
Yum!
We saw Fo back off to work and marched straight towards the Glenbow. Little did I know that 5 hours would not be enough to quench Heather’s curiosity and I had to promise to take her back to Calgary so that she could finish checking out the medieval weapons on the 4th flour and to check out the new Greek and Roman exhibit coming this summer.
Personally I’m only good at any museum for about two and a half hours and had to duck out for a quick coffee with my good friend and best man to be Jeff.
Then Chris and I had to kill some time in the museum until Heather was ready to leave or until we dragged her to the airport. The Gatling Gun makes an excellent diversion for a pair of middle aged misfits.
Now we didn’t just goof off on the fourth floor, we took in some Canadian culture and ventured around the Canadian paintings and marveled at the Hindu and Japanese sculptures on the Second floor. Then there was the rather extensive display of Aboriginal artifacts on the third floor.
… and there was my brush with the local wild life
For me though the best was of course the weapons and war memorials on the fourth floor. The display about women in war was very intriguing and this one picture of a Salvadoran guerilla fighter and her baby stuck with me.
The medieval display took the cake though. Spears, swords, bows and arrows all were pretty impressive. I can’t imagine how exhausting moving around in a full suit of armor would have been let alone in a squire’s partial armor and heavy sword.
If the size of this guys package is any indication though I think these guys were more than up to the task. The ladies would have been pretty tough back then to handle that tackle
) and can you really blame a girl for being curious?
Remarkably we were ushered out of the museum after that last shot but the security guard was kind enough to let me snap one more picture of Heather posing with a knight on horseback wearing a full suit of armor.
Calgary is a western town though and you see it everywhere. Cowboys with western wear and statues of horses downtown like the one on the left in downtown Calgary. The one on the right I’m told is appraised at 1.5 million and is proudly displayed at the Calgary Airport. Apparently it was paid for with airport taxes…. glad to see the money was well spent.
The trip was great and a big thank you out to Fo, Chris, Jeff, and Susie for making Heather feel welcome. We’re definitely looking forward to our next trip out to Calgary.
