Debit Fraud at Silver City Winnipeg

by Demetri on July 5, 2006

Over the past few days I’ve been seeing a few visitors coming to demetri.ca from Google in relation to the debit card scam [AKA debit card skimming] that I was victim to last Saturday June 24th, at the Polo Park Silvercity, and that had me wondering just how many people were affected.

I haven’t seen anything in the news about it but my guess based on a comment that I overheard at the Royal Bank was that about 24 RBC clients would have been scammed on June 24, 2006. RBC has about a 20% market share so it’s possible that up to 120 were burgled in this way.

So out of academic curiosity, if you were scammed by the debit card skimming at Silver City Polo Park in Winnipeg could you email me and let me know the amount that was taken? I had $2000 taken from my accounts. I can be emailed at demetri@demetri.ca.

I’m also curious to know if you had thought something “didn’t look right” at the time. I had joked with my fiancee about the Fast Pay machine looking clunky and wondered if it was one of the scam machines.

I went as far as to give it a jiggle and tug and just laughed at how paranoid I was being.
